Therapist-Approved Tips: A Bay Area Therapist Shares Efficient Ways to Ask Teachers Questions with Confidence

I help clients create a handful of go-to, efficient ways to ask questions with confidence.

When clients feel uncomfortable asking questions

As a dedicated therapist in the Bay Area, I specialize in empowering clients to navigate the complexities of assertiveness while identifying and setting appropriate boundaries. Many individuals struggle with the discomfort of asking clarifying questions. Here is a list of example ways to ask efficient questions with confidence:

1.    Be Specific:

Instead of saying "I don't get it," ask,

"Can you explain how this formula works in this problem?" or

"Could you go over step 3 again? I don't understand why we do that."

2.    Ask for Examples:

"Could you show me another example?" or

"Could you walk through a similar problem slowly so I can follow along?"

3.    Use "What" and "Why" Questions:

These questions get to the core of the concept.

For example,

"What does this concept mean in simpler terms?" or

"Why do we need to use this method instead of another?"

4.    Ask for Clarification on Terms:

Sometimes confusion arises from unfamiliar terms.

Students can ask,

"What does this word mean in this context?" or

"Could you define this term more clearly?"

5.    Ask for a Visual Aid:

Some students learn better with visual cues, so ask,

"Can you draw a diagram to explain this?" or

"Could you show me a chart/graph that illustrates this concept?"

6.    Summarize and Ask if It’s Correct:

After hearing an explanation, students can say,

"So, what you're saying is... Is that right?"

This shows the teacher that the student is engaging and trying to process the information.

7.    Ask for Breakdowns:

"Can you break this down into smaller steps?" or

"Can you go over this slowly so I can take notes?"
